We often treat resilience as something people either “have” or “don’t have,” like eye color. In reality, resilience is a psychological muscle that is built through consistent, often difficult, use. It is the ability to navigate a storm without losing your internal compass.
In this first quarter of the year, challenges will inevitably arise. Resilience is built in the “bounce-back.” It’s about Affection for your struggling self. When you fail, or when life feels overwhelming, do you berate yourself, or do you offer yourself the same grace you would a friend?
To strengthen this muscle, practice “Cognitive Reframing.” Instead of viewing a setback as a dead end, view it as a pivot point. This doesn’t mean “toxic positivity”; it means acknowledging the pain while simultaneously looking for the path forward. This is the ultimate Advocacy for your future self.
