Forest Bathing (Shinrin-yoku) in the Modern City

You do not need to live in the wilderness to benefit from the healing power of nature. Shinrin-yoku, or Forest Bathing, is the practice of “taking in the forest atmosphere.” Scientific studies show that even 20 minutes in a green space can significantly lower cortisol levels and boost the immune system.

In a city like Houston, this might mean a walk through a local park or even sitting under a single oak tree. The key is sensory engagement. Leave your phone in your pocket. Feel the texture of the bark, listen to the wind in the leaves, and notice the varying shades of green.

This is a form of Environmental Empathy. When we connect with the earth, we remember that we are part of a larger, slower system. It grounds our racing thoughts and provides a natural form of Advocacy for our nervous system, which is often starved for the organic rhythms of the natural world.
