Digital Minimalism: Clearing the Mental Clutter

Zen garden rocks and sand

As we move further into 2026, the “digital noise” has never been louder. Our brains were not designed to process the constant influx of global news, social comparisons, and work notifications. In Zen philosophy, there is a concept called Ma—the pure, essential space between objects. Without Ma, music is just noise, and a room is just a storage unit.

Digital Minimalism is the practice of bringing Ma back to your mind. Mental stability requires “negative space.” When your phone is the first thing you touch in the morning and the last thing you see at night, you are denying your brain the space it needs to process your own thoughts.

The Zen Imago Approach: Practice Advocacy for your own attention. Set “Digital Sunset” hours—no screens after 8:00 PM. Audit your notifications; if a pop-up doesn’t provide you with joy or essential information, silence it. By clearing the digital clutter, you make room for the meaningful connections that actually sustain you.
